5-6 letter max (depends on letters on clear bags)

2 patch max on small bags

5 patch max on medium bags

5-6 patch max on large bag (depends on letters) (or based on staggered letters 6 fits well) 

6 patch max (across) on xl but a smaller plane, star, bolt, heart etc can also fit above or below. The word travel does not fit on this bag unless it’s staggered letters.
